I Cleaned the Litter Box Twice a Day. My Apartment Still Smelled Like Cat Pee.

Rating Emily Stone by Emily Stone Pet Care

I had more products for cat smell than I had cats.

Two cats. One apartment. An entire shelf of things that were supposed to stop the place smelling like a litter box.

And somehow, I was still lighting a candle before anyone came over.

That was what pissed me off. I wasn't ignoring the problem. I was spending time and money on it constantly.

I'd scoop, clean, take the bags outside, and finally sit down. Then I'd catch that smell and start wondering what else I needed to buy.

If you've been doing the same thing, here's what I tried and the part I kept overlooking.

1. I Tried Making It Smell Better

The obvious place to start was the air-freshener aisle.

Breevi lifestyle

A spray for the sofa. A scented plug-in near the hallway. A candle for when someone was coming over.

I wanted someone to walk in and smell something nice. What I got was fragrance with a cat smell underneath it.

I'd spray again, and now the room smelled stronger. That didn't mean it smelled cleaner.

For accidents, I used a suitable cleaner and dealt with the spot properly. That job mattered. But cleaning a spot and dealing with the air in the room were two different jobs.

I kept treating them like the same one.

2. I Kept Changing the Litter

Maybe I was buying the wrong kind.

So I tried another. Then another. Read the reviews. Followed the recommendations. Stood in the pet shop comparing bags like one of them contained the answer to my entire life.

Some controlled the smell better than others. None gave me a reason to stop cleaning, obviously.

But even with a freshly scooped box, I sometimes noticed a smell when I came home.

That was when I started taking it personally. How could I spend that much time looking after two cats and still worry that people thought my home was dirty?

3. I Bought a Purifier Without Asking the Right Question

I saw dust and pollen on the packaging and assumed that meant it would handle everything else too.

I hadn't checked what the filter was designed to do about odors. That was my mistake.

Breevi filtration layers

HEPA filtration is for airborne particles. Smells involve gases, and capturing dust isn't the same job as reducing those gases.

I didn't need to give up on filtration. I needed to understand which part of a filter system was actually intended for odor control.

At the time, though, I just added "air purifier" to the list of purchases I was annoyed about.

4. I Tried Hiding the Whole Setup

A covered box. A different corner. A screen so the first thing guests saw wouldn't be cat litter.

The room looked better. But making the box less visible didn't automatically deal with the smell around it.

I still had to open it, scoop it, and clean it. And I was still checking the hallway before someone arrived.

I'd changed how everything looked. I hadn't added anything for odor control in the room air.

5. Then I Caught Myself Turning Down a Visit

A friend asked if she could stop by after work.

I started typing "maybe another day" before I even thought about it.

Not because I was busy. Because I wanted time to scoop again, check the sofa, open a window, and make the place smell presentable. For a coffee. In my own home.

That's when I realized how much this had started controlling me.

I mentioned it to a friend with cats. She asked whether I'd looked at Breevi.

I nearly said, "I've already tried a purifier."

Then I remembered I hadn't even checked the odor-filtration part of the first one.

6. This Time I Looked at What Was Inside

I wasn't interested in another promise on the front of a box. I wanted to know what the thing actually did.

Breevi describes its system as a compact plug-in air purifier with HEPA filtration and an activated carbon layer.

The HEPA filter targets particles such as dust and pet dander. The carbon layer is designed to help absorb pet odors.

That was the part I'd been missing when I first compared products. I had looked at whether a device could catch particles. I hadn't asked what it used for smells.

7. It Fit Where I Needed It

I didn't have much spare floor space, so the wall-outlet format appealed to me.

I checked the room guidance, chose a suitable place, and selected the settings. No perfume refill. No water tank. No need to move the furniture to fit another appliance beside it.

I also checked the filter-care instructions instead of assuming I could forget about it forever.

This was something I could add to the routine I already had.

8. I Kept the Cleaning Routine

Same cats. Same litter. Same scooping.

I wanted to assess adding air filtration, not change five things at once and guess which one mattered.

I still cleaned accidents properly and washed the bedding. A plug-in doesn't remove a stain from the carpet or empty a litter tray.

How to set up Breevi

The job I wanted Breevi to add was odor filtration for the air passing through it. That finally made sense to me. Each part of the routine had a job, instead of every new purchase being expected to solve everything.

9. I Wanted an Honest Answer at the Door

When my friend next came over, I asked her to be specific about what she noticed before I explained what I'd changed.

The entrance. The hallway. The room with the boxes.

I wanted more than "it's fine."

"It doesn't smell the way it used to. What did you change?"
— Her friend, on her next visit

That became my way of checking the setup alongside my own observations. I didn't want to judge the room just by the smell I was used to, or by how much I'd spent trying to fix it.

If you try a change in your own home, ask someone you trust to do the same. An honest answer is more useful than you standing in the hallway trying to convince yourself.

10. You Shouldn't Need a Cleaning Deadline to Invite Someone Over

You love your cats. You clean up after them. You still want a home you feel comfortable inviting people into.

That's why it's so frustrating to keep buying things and feel like you're getting nowhere.

If you've been changing the litter, covering the box, or adding another scent, take a look at the part of the routine that deals with the room air.

Breevi is a compact option to consider for that job. It runs silently at 15 dB — completely unnoticed, plugged into any outlet.

How To Try It

The company behind Breevi is smaller than the big air purifier brands, so they cycle through stock quickly — especially during multi-pack promotions, which is the way to go if you need units in multiple rooms.

Every order comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee and a 1-year warranty. If it doesn't change anything, you send it back.

But if your experience is anything like mine, you won't be sending it back.

UPDATE: Breevi — Multi-Pack Deal Still Running

Since sharing my story, I've had dozens of cat owners message me asking where to get Breevi. Good news: the company is still running their Buy 2, Get 1 Free promotion — ideal if you need coverage across multiple rooms.

Stock moves fast and drops without warning. Every order includes a 30-day money-back guarantee and 1-year warranty. If your home smells like mine used to, give it a try while the deal lasts.

Due to high demand, Breevi frequently goes out of stock — especially during multi-pack promotions. Check below to see if it's still available in your state.
